Sri Lankan expatriates in Calgary celebrated their homeland's independence with a message of peace. Hundreds of Sri Lankans gathered at McDougall United Church, 8516 Athabasca St. to observe the 60th anniversary of their native country's independence from British colonial rule. Organisers of event in Calgary made a call for peace the central message of the gathering, said Sri Lanka Canada Association - Calgary president Tony De Silva. "Sri Lanka is going through a very hard time right now, so we wanted to convey a message of peace and unity," said De Silva.
